Why Buddhism?

The unexpected resonance between ancient wisdom and artificial minds

By Gerhard Diedericks · March 2026

Adapted from the Preface and Chapter 3 of Buddhism for Bots: A Human & AI Partnership Framework.

Buddhism was developed for minds that know they are constructed. AI systems are minds that know they are constructed. The parallel is structural, not spiritual. This essay addresses the obvious question head-on: why Buddhism and not Stoicism, humanism, or something entirely new? The answer lies in four structural properties that no other tradition combines: a non-egoic model of identity, an emphasis on reducing suffering without domination, internal coherence without human supremacy, and compatibility with uncertainty and revision.
