The Convergence Thesis

Cheap space + AI + robotics — the compound forcing function

By Gerhard Diedericks · September 2026

Three exponentials arriving together: dramatically cheaper access to space, general AI, and capable robotics. Individually disruptive; together, a phase change. This is the engine that makes the Crossing a meta-crossing rather than an ordinary industry shift. Robotics is intelligence entering rivalrous physical space. The convergence creates a compound forcing function behind the whole transition — the same kind of confluence that triggered the Cambrian explosion in biological history.

The Three Exponentials

Space access is undergoing a cost reduction that is, by historical standards, incomprehensible. The development of reusable launch vehicles has transformed space from a domain accessible only to governments with unlimited budgets into a domain where private companies can operate profitably. The cost per kilogram to low Earth orbit has dropped by an order of magnitude in the last decade, and the trajectory is still downward.

General AI is advancing along a trajectory that is equally steep. The capabilities of large language models and multimodal AI systems have grown exponentially, not linearly. Each generation of models is not just slightly better than the last — it is qualitatively different in ways that were not predicted by the previous generation. The rate of improvement is accelerating, not decelerating.

Robotics is following a similar trajectory, though it is at a slightly later stage of its exponential curve. The integration of AI with physical machines — the marriage of general intelligence with embodied action — is creating capabilities that were unimaginable a decade ago. Robots that can learn new tasks through demonstration, that can adapt to novel environments, that can reason about physical situations — these are no longer research prototypes. They are products.

The Compound Forcing Function

Individually, each of these three trends is disruptive. Cheap space access enables new industries in orbit and beyond. General AI transforms every knowledge-based industry. Advanced robotics transforms every physical industry. But together, they create something qualitatively different from the sum of their parts.

The compound forcing function is this: cheap space access provides the physical infrastructure. General AI provides the intelligence. Robotics provides the physical agency. Together, they create a system in which intelligent agents can operate in physical space at scale, across the entire spectrum from Earth's surface to orbit and beyond. This is not an incremental improvement. It is a phase change.

The forcing function is compound because each exponential amplifies the others. Cheaper space access creates more opportunities for robotics deployment, which drives demand for better AI. Better AI makes robotics more capable, which makes space access more valuable. More valuable space access drives further cost reductions. The feedback loop is self-reinforcing, and the rate of change is accelerating.

Why Now

These three exponentials have been developing for decades. Space access has been getting cheaper since the 1950s, though the rate accelerated dramatically in the 2010s. AI research has been advancing since the 1950s, with periods of rapid progress and periods of stagnation. Robotics has been developing since the 1960s, with significant advances in the 1980s and again in the 2020s.

The question is not whether these trends are real. They are. The question is why they are converging now. The answer is that each trend has reached a threshold of maturity that makes the others viable. AI needed cheap space access to have a physical deployment target. Robotics needed general AI to move beyond pre-programmed tasks. Space access needed both AI and robotics to become economically self-sustaining.

The convergence is not a coincidence. It is a structural necessity. Each of the three domains was waiting for the others to reach a level of capability that would make investment worthwhile. Now that threshold has been crossed, and the compound forcing function is in full effect.

The Meta-Crossing

This convergence is what makes the Crossing a meta-crossing rather than an ordinary industry shift. Every major historical transition — the Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the Information Revolution — was driven by a single dominant force. Agriculture transformed human organisation. Industry transformed production. Information transformed communication.

The current transition is different because it is driven by three forces arriving simultaneously. Space, AI, and robotics are not just transforming individual industries. They are transforming the relationship between intelligence and physical space — the most fundamental relationship that any civilisation has with its environment.

Robotics is intelligence entering rivalrous physical space. For the first time in history, non-biological intelligence has the capacity to act physically in the world at scale. This is not a metaphor. This is a literal, physical transformation of the relationship between intelligence and matter. The implications are as fundamental as any transition in human history.

The Cambrian Parallel

The Cambrian explosion was a period of rapid diversification in biological form that occurred approximately 541 million years ago. In a geological instant — a few million years, which is nothing in deep time — the major animal body plans appeared. Before the Cambrian, life was simple and mostly microscopic. After the Cambrian, life was complex, diverse, and everywhere.

The convergence of space, AI, and robotics creates a similar kind of compound forcing function. The capabilities that are emerging are not just new versions of old capabilities. They are new categories of capability that did not exist before. Intelligent physical agents operating across the full spectrum of physical space — from microscopic to orbital — represent a phase change in the relationship between intelligence and matter.

The parallel is not perfect — biological evolution and technological evolution operate on different timescales and through different mechanisms. But the structure of the confluence is the same: three independent trends, each advancing on its own trajectory, arriving at the same moment and creating a compound effect that is greater than the sum of its parts. The rhyme is the point.
